Locum Doctor Jobs in Northern Ireland

Get Cleared for Locum Work in Northern Ireland, Step by Step.

We work with all five HSC Trusts in Northern Ireland. Clearance takes several steps and some depend on other people, so we show you the order, what to have ready and who does what. You will have a named compliance consultant from your first call until your first shift.

Standard Compliance Checks

  • GMC/HCPC registration: active and in good standing

  • Criminal record checks:

    • England and Wales: Enhanced DBS certificate, within required timeframe

    • Northern Ireland: Enhanced AccessNI check, within required timeframe

  • Occupational health clearance: including immunisation records

  • Professional indemnity insurance: confirmed and in date

  • Appraisal and revalidation status: for medical practitioners

  • Right to Work in the UK: documented and verified

  • Two satisfactory professional (clinical) references

  • Mandatory training: verified and up to date

Your Pathway

  1. Speak to a consultant: We confirm your right to work, take your CV and talk through the rate for the roles that suit you. You will know the rate before you spend anything.

  2. Clinical references: We need two, from within the last 3 years, with no gaps. We help you choose referees and chase them with you.

  3. Occupational Health: Gather your immunisation evidence first. We tell you when to book your fitness assessment, because the paperwork needs to be in date when the certificate is issued.

  4. Immediate Life Support (ILS): If you do not hold it, we give you the course options and dates.

  5. AccessNI: The check usually takes up to 7 days. Your consultant confirms the cost and process before you start.

  6. Trust specific requirements: Some Trusts ask for extra training such as Encompass. We confirm the position for your Trust before you pay for anything.

  7. Cleared: Your consultant offers you shifts that suit your grade and specialty.

Costs: In Plain Terms

  • You pay for your own clearance documents, training, and professional indemnity.

  • We apply for your AccessNI check ourselves.

  • Accommodation in Northern Ireland is not provided. You arrange and pay for it.

  • Some Trusts ask for additional training before you start. We tell you which, before you commit.

Rates and How You Get Paid

  • Rates follow the HSC rate card for your grade and the urgency of the shift; this will all be confirmed, with costing, by your consultant before you sign any contract.

  • We tell you your rate before you spend anything on clearance, so you never clear for a shift you would not take.

  • Tax and National Insurance are deducted at source before you are paid. We confirm how you are paid before you start clearance.

Locum Doctor Jobs in Northern Ireland FAQ

  1. How long does clearance take? It depends mostly on your referees and Occupational Health. Your consultant gives you a realistic timeline on your first call and updates you every 3 working days.

  2. What if I do not have two referees? Tell us on the form or your first call. We will help you identify suitable alternatives before you spend anything.

  3. Do I need ILS? Yes for most roles. If you do not hold it, we give you options and dates.

  4. Is the clearance reusable? Many items stay valid for use beyond this role, so you keep the benefit.

  5. How do I become a locum doctor in Northern Ireland? Register your interest with us. A locum consultant calls you to confirm your grade, right to work and rate. If the terms suit you, our compliance team takes you through clearance, and once you are cleared we offer you shifts.

  6. How are locum doctors paid? Tax and National Insurance are deducted at source before you are paid. We confirm how you are paid before you start clearance.

  7. What will I be paid? Rates follow the HSC rate card for your grade and the urgency of the shift. We tell you your rate before you spend anything on clearance.

  8. What does clearance cost me? We will provide you with a list of the costs and rates that you will be paid; you are to pay for your own documents and accomodation, while we apply for your AccessNI check.

  9. What do I need to register? GMC registration, right to work in the UK, two clinical referees, up to date immunisation records and Occupational Health clearance, current appraisal and revalidation, professional indemnity and up to date mandatory training.

  10. Is accommodation provided? No. You arrange and pay for your own accommodation in Northern Ireland.

  11. Can I use my existing AccessNI or DBS certificate? No. We apply for an AccessNI check in our own name for every Northern Ireland placement, because we are accountable for the check on the doctors we place.
